It was announced on Tuesday night that Captain Phil Harris died. He was the fishing boat captain of the fish vessel Cornelia Marie on Discovery's "Deadliest Catch". www.corneliamarie.com
I watched the show a lot when I had TV. He was one of my favorites. He was passionate about what he did. Supported his crew but kick them in the butt when they needed it. (I think that is in the captain's job description by the look of it...but I could be wrong!)
He looked tired a lot because fishing is incredibly hard work but he also looked happy. He was surrounded by family and friends doing what he loved. If it gets better than that...just tell me how.
It's easy to judge someone else's life. "Oh that doesn't look too hard, he was given his life on a platter, she doesn't have a clue..I could do that so much better, etc". We are by enlarge are good "judgers" usually without all the information about any given topic. We judge books by their covers many times a day.
When we do that we miss many compelling "stories" that are right in front of us.
Watching the "Deadliest Catch" and Captain Phil gave me an appreciation for a profession I really had no framework for. I didn't understand it. I do now. I understand the danger, the frustration and the commitment it takes to make it all come together.
I never thought I would watch a show about fishing...then it came on and I couldn't find the remote so I watched it :). As like any good fisherman...they got me hooked. Instead of judging what I thought I would see...I just watched and listened. A good lesson whenever encountering a new book. A lesson I work at putting into practice every day.
Rest in peace Captain Phil. You will be missed.
