No matter where you are on your path gratitude needs to be a part of your every day awareness. What does that mean?
It means that no matter where you are..if things are great or if things suck right now...there are reasons to be grateful. Granted it is easier to be grateful if things are great. The sun is shining and your world feels right. Then gratitude comes with little effort.
But if you are on the other end of that spectrum...gratitude may not come as easily but it still should come. Gratitude can help you recall your "institutional memory"...the memory of your life. When things are bad...it's easy to forget how far you have come. And that my dear friend is something you always should remember.
Those memories can sustain you as you move through tougher times and serve as motivation for what it's possible for you. They can also bring a smile to your face which in challenging times is also something to be grateful for.
Today I was thinking about times I am grateful for. I thought about how I have been blessed to be with people as they died and I have been blessed to be with someone as they were born. I am grateful for each encounter...they have added to the richness of my life.
That's what gratitude can also do...help to remind you of what you already know...all the riches in your life aren't measured in your bank account.
