I think the natural inclination is to always think if something goes wrong..it's us. If someone is rude to us...oh my goodness what did we do? If a relationship goes wrong...what did we do? Guess what...sometimes it is NOT us...it is them!
What a concept!
Last night or early this morning I stopped at a store to get some food for Pumpkin and me. It was late or early depending on your framework...and I was using my tips to pay for it. The woman at the checkout was really impatient with me counting out my one dollar bills and kind of rude. I left the store feeling bad...then I realized...it wasn't about me. It was her.
Maybe she was tired...maybe her feet hurt...maybe she wanted to be home...maybe she just doesn't like to count. It wasn't me. So I got in the car and turned up the music and headed home to fall into a mini coma for a few hours before I head back to work once again.
But here is my question...why the natural inclination to assume it's always us?
Yes! I always remind myself and my friends that 98% of the time, how people react to us has actually nothing to do with us. Once you figure that out, life is a lot easier. It's also a great reminder to get out of our own head....we humans naturally just reside in our own head most of the time.
