Remember old cartoons?...There is one that I can see in my mind of Elmer Fudd with some type of animal that has bitten him on the butt just hanging on for dear life. As Elmer turns around...the animal just turns too while not letting go! For some reason I keep seeing that image while I have thinking about this past week.
I envision that animal doing the biting is like our old habits that can sneak up on us and grab hold when we are not paying attention. And pay attention we must. Not in a "frantically focused crazy person way" (while entertaining to watch...not a good way to function long term)...but rather like a person who is committed to living their life in a different way. Letting go of the past and developing new ways of being that support that life you now say you want.
This seems to have to be a very active process as one moves forward. You have to pay attention. You have to look after yourself. You have to "have your own back".
I am not suggesting that you go into a hyper vigilant mode...I lived that way for safety reasons for years and the unseen toll of that way of living is staggering. What I am saying is we need to have a framework...a set of new habits that we have to have in place to do the best job we can for us. Last week was an example again for me...if I don't do that ..old habits DO bite me in the butt. And that is darn uncomfortable.
And it's just not about having new ways of being...it's about putting them into practice. Any information is just that...information. It's the action of using that information that holds the magic.
Tomorrow I will share with you what I plan to do. Yes, I am a work in progress here and some times it's not pretty...but the key word to remember here is PROGRESS! Now that's a word filled with magic :)
